MIT and collaborators have developed a new soft magnetic hydrogel capable of creating microscopic, magnetically responsive robots called magno-bots. The technology allows tiny structures smaller than a grain of sand to transform instantly into active robotic grippers when activated by a magnet swipe, with potential applications for soft, microscopic robotics and materials.
MIT researchers have developed a light-activated gel that can switch from insulating to 400 times more conductive upon light exposure. The material uses photo-ion generators (PIGs) incorporated into polyurethane rubber, representing an advancement in the emerging field of photo-ionotronics. This technology could enable self-adaptive soft materials for applications in wearables, human-machine interfaces, and soft robotics. The work was conducted by MIT's Wallin lab with collaborators from Reality Labs at Meta.
