Microsoft announced Rho-alpha, its first robotics model derived from the Phi vision-language model series, which turns natural-language commands into control signals for bimanual manipulation. Rho-alpha adds tactile sensing, is trained on physical demonstrations, simulated tasks, and web-scale visual-question-answering data, and is being evaluated on dual-arm and humanoid platforms. Microsoft is soliciting organizations for a Research Early Access Program and plans a later Microsoft Foundry release, with technical details to follow.
A Section 232 investigation by the commerce secretary concluded that imports of robotics, industrial machinery, and components threaten U.S. national security and economic competitiveness. President Donald J. Trump directed the commerce secretary and U.S. trade representative to negotiate with trading partners to adjust imports. Industry experts said the determination does not immediately impose tariffs, but negotiations could lead to tariffs, quotas, or other measures affecting finished robots and components.
Teradyne Robotics and Sereact formed a partnership combining Sereact's Cortex physical AI platform with Universal Robots collaborative arms for unstructured retail, logistics and manufacturing tasks. Hundreds of UR robots in dual-arm systems have been shipped to customer sites, including Zalando locations in Germany and Poland where they autonomously process returned fashion items. At Nvidia GTC Berlin 2026, the companies demonstrated Cortex running on two UR12e-1300 robots using Nvidia's simulation, training and edge-computing technologies.
