Boston Dynamics gives more insight into its redesigned humanoid hand

Boston Dynamics provided deeper insight into its redesigned humanoid robot hand, which features four fingers (dropping the pinky), 13 degrees of freedom, and 13 identical encapsulated actuators with no fragile cables. In an interview with The Robot Report, Alberto Rodriguez explained the design philosophy prioritized reliability and mass manufacturability over complexity, and that the hand is designed for high-fidelity simulation to enable sim-to-real reinforcement learning. The new hand has been tested extensively at Boston Dynamics' headquarters but not yet deployed across the full robot fleet.
