All-electric humanoid robot Alex revealed by IHMC. No hydraulics, battery-powered, designed for real-world urban environments and first-responder scenarios. Predecessor Nadia was lab-tethered; Alex is untethered. Demo at IHMC open house includes door traversal, shadow boxing. Design competition for new head announced.
Boston Dynamics has opened a robotics center at Hyundai Motor Group's Metaplant America in Ellabell, Georgia, serving as a test bed and training facility for its Atlas humanoid robots. The company is training Atlas to handle parts sequencing and heavy lifting, with a goal of performing component assembly by 2030. Hyundai plans to deploy 25,000 Atlas units across its global factories and establish a U.S. facility capable of producing 30,000 robots per year.
Toyota announced plans to deploy 400,000 in-house-developed ELEY robots across 60 factories worldwide starting in 2028, with an annual budget of approximately $6.4 billion, aiming to capture tacit knowledge from 18,000 retiring master craftspeople (takumi) using diffusion-based AI trained on human demonstrations. The wheeled ELEY robot uses quasi-direct drive actuators for safe human interaction and represents Toyota's technological sovereignty strategy against competitors like Tesla, Hyundai, and BMW who are pursuing different robotics approaches.
