HD Hyundai is unveiling its first internally developed humanoid robot at FIX 2026 in Daegu as part of its 'Future of Shipyard' (FOS) initiative, targeting completion by 2030. The strategy aims to automate dangerous shipyard tasks like welding, painting, polishing, and grinding, with the FOS projected to cut accidents, boost productivity by ~30%, and shorten shipbuilding periods by ~30%. Rivals Hanwha Ocean and Samsung Heavy Industries are pursuing similar AI-driven smart shipyard efforts with their own humanoid partnerships.
HD Hyundai Robotics plans to transfer AI capabilities developed for its in-house humanoid prototype—including perception, manipulation, force/tactile control, and task planning—into its existing industrial robots and cobots, with CTO Ahn Sung-hwan outlining a broader shared platform spanning industrial, collaborative, mobile, and humanoid robots. The company also invested ₩13 billion in AIDIN Robotics to co-develop a five-finger hand for heavy industry and continues collaborating with Persona AI on shipyard welding humanoids.
HD Hyundai Robotics invested $9.5 million in Aidin Robotics, taking an equity stake in the South Korean sensing startup to jointly develop a five-finger robotic hand and industrial automation systems for shipbuilding and heavy industry applications.
